EDUCATION IS NOT THE FILLING OF A BUCKET, BUT THE LIGHTING OF A FIRE

About Foundations For Great Expectations

Foundations for Great Expectations is a private school which was created out of a need for higher expectations in education.  Too often children are given a task to perform without an understanding of why and what purpose the task serves; it becomes busy work rather than a learning experience. Education has become fragmented knowledge that is compartmentalized to performing a set of standards which lacks content and purpose. Learning at Foundations  is  focused on creating, critical thinking and problem solving. Our purpose is to provide a place of learning where students not only receive a solid foundation in reading, writing, math and history but also learn to become problem solvers and critical thinkers. Foundations for Great Expectations is located in St. George, Utah.

About Cathy Dobrusky:
Cathy Dobrusky is the co-founder and director of Foundations. Her passion for education began when she started homeschooling her four children in 1993. In 1997 Cathy Dobrusky had the privilege of founding and directing American Heritage Academy (AHA) in Las Vegas, NV.  AHA is a K-8th faith based private school that was born out of multiple request from parents looking for an alternative to public education. Over a ten year period of time AHA grew into a private school which served PreK-8th grade students with an enrollment of 275 students. The Academy served some special-needs students, but the largest enrollment is accelerated students. During this time she also wrote the ‘Live and Learn' section for Desert Saints Magazine from 2oo2 -2004, spoke at the National Education Convention and served as a resource for home schoolers and educators in the community. AHA gave her the opportunity to work with 27 full and part-time teachers. She is a people person and thoroughly enjoyed working with the students, parents and staff, and looks forward to doing the same at Foundations.

In the classroom, Cathy believes that it is the duty and morale obligation of the teacher to meet the needs of each and every student; to find where the student's knowledge and skills are lacking, and fill the breach. Her future plans are to finish a Masters program in Education at George Wythe College and write chronological historical fiction series for young adults. She loves working with children and young adults and believes that they are our best hope for good future leaders. It is important that they become critical thinkers and problems solvers. She has the talent and motivation to teach these critical skills.
